I just finished, Out of My Heart by Sharon Draper, who authored the beloved bestseller Out of My Mind。 This book continues Melody's story as she learns about and begs her parents to let her attend a summer camp for children with disabilities (Melody has cerebral palsy, is confined to a wheelchair, and is nonverbal)。 It is incredibly touching, heartwarming, and introduces characters that I want to read more about!Melody's cabinmates are as lovable as Melody herself, and Melody's personal camp cou I just finished, Out of My Heart by Sharon Draper, who authored the beloved bestseller Out of My Mind。 This book continues Melody's story as she learns about and begs her parents to let her attend a summer camp for children with disabilities (Melody has cerebral palsy, is confined to a wheelchair, and is nonverbal)。 It is incredibly touching, heartwarming, and introduces characters that I want to read more about!Melody's cabinmates are as lovable as Melody herself, and Melody's personal camp counselor, Trinity, serves as a great role model for how to listen to and respect someone with disabilities。 Melody experiences swimming, horseback riding, and even her first dance。 While some may criticize this book for being too triumphant, no one can argue that Melody deserves a win。 Friendship with other girls who face similar struggles is not unrealistic, and this book shows the necessity of these friendships to Melody's soul。 Abled children also need to see that Melody's disabilities do not keep her from thinking and feeling the same things they think and feel。 This is a story of hope - that the Melodys of this world can experience their own triumphs, and that the rest of us will cheer with and for them, believing in what they CAN do if given the chance。 。。。more

Loved this sequel to "Out of My Mind"! It was so heartwarming to experience what Melody was experiencing for the first time at a special camp for kids like her。 It was amazing how the camp was set up to accommodate so many kids with varying abilities and needs。 I really hope all states have something like the camp Melody was able to attend。 I also hope Sharon Draper will continue writing about Melody and not wait too long to write the next one。 I'd like to know how her parents reacted to all the Loved this sequel to "Out of My Mind"! What an inspiring book! While it is a YA book, I think anyone can and should read it。 Melody is an amazing, courageous and brilliant young lady。 While she is away at camp she comes to discover so many things she never thought she could do because both families and society have their own set of rules about what can and can’t be accomplished。 Everyone wants a place to belong and Melody found hers。 This was a warm, beautiful and poignant read。 Thank you to Simon & Schuster for the ARC and to Ms。 Dr What an inspiring book! After reading Out of My Mind several years ago, I did want to know what happened to Melody。 I am so glad to see her courage and independence in Out of My Heart。 I love the cover and the significance of the firefly throughout the story。

Another middle school read。 If you've read Out of My Mind, you might wonder what happened to Melody。 I thought this was good, but not quite as good as Out of My Mind。 Another middle school read。 If you've read Out of My Mind, you might wonder what happened to Melody。 I thought this was good, but not quite as good as Out of My Mind。 。。。more

So I enjoyed visiting Melody again。 (This time at summer camp ) I really liked how Ms。 Draper showed a rang of disabilities within the camp。 I also appreciate Melody growing up and wanting to do things independently。 This was a sweet solid book, and worth the wait if you were a fan of the first book "Out of My Mind"。 My favorite scenes had to be with Melody and her crush。 So I enjoyed visiting Melody again。 (This time at summer camp ) I really liked how Ms。 Draper showed a rang of disabilities within the camp。 I also appreciate Melody growing up and wanting to do things independently。 This was a sweet solid book, and worth the wait if you were a fan of the first book "Out of My Mind"。 My favorite scenes had to be with Melody and her crush。 。。。more

This book is definitely just for kids; whereas her first one I felt could teach us all about cerebral palsy and kindness, this one is about making new friends and trying new things。

Sequel to Out of My Mind, we continue Melody’s story。 Confined to a wheelchair be cerebral palsy, Melody’s mind, courage and determination cannot be confined。 An explorer and learner, she is a self advocate encouraged and enabled by her parents and little sister Penny, and her ultra supportive neighbor Mrs V。 I’m Out of her Mind, Melody was able to get technology that enabled her to speak, research, ask and answer questions, express herself, and even compete in her school’s quiz kid competition。 Sequel to Out of My Mind, we continue Melody’s story。 Confined to a wheelchair be cerebral palsy, Melody’s mind, courage and determination cannot be confined。 An explorer and learner, she is a self advocate encouraged and enabled by her parents and little sister Penny, and her ultra supportive neighbor Mrs V。 I’m Out of her Mind, Melody was able to get technology that enabled her to speak, research, ask and answer questions, express herself, and even compete in her school’s quiz kid competition。 It’s summer and Melody wants to go to camp and do things other campers do。 With the help of the town librarian and research by her supportive family and Mrs。 V, a special camp is found, and Melody moves from wait list to camper! This book was really sweet and it was good to be back in Melody’s world。 The storyline fell flat for me。 The audiobook narrator was very childish sounding so I’d recommend reading it instead of listening。

Out of My Mind is a classic of kids' literature, and a surefire read aloud or recommendation for kids in grades 4-6。 This sequel doesn't have the same emotional punch of Out of My Heart, but is a satisfying sequel as we follow Melody through the adventure of going to a week of sleep away camp for kids with disabilities。 Initial misgivings and fear give way to deep friendships, new bravery and experiences, and even a flirtation with a boy。 This is a sweet and happy sequel for fans of the first bo Out of My Mind is a classic of kids' literature, and a surefire read aloud or recommendation for kids in grades 4-6。 This sequel doesn't have the same emotional punch of Out of My Heart, but is a satisfying sequel as we follow Melody through the adventure of going to a week of sleep away camp for kids with disabilities。 Initial misgivings and fear give way to deep friendships, new bravery and experiences, and even a flirtation with a boy。 This is a sweet and happy sequel for fans of the first book。 。。。more

You may wonder how I can possibly love so many books。 The key is reading the right reviews。 I read the middle grade books that have made the most "best of" lists, the ones that Kirkus and School Library Journal have chosen as stand outs, and the ones that particularly appeal to me。 This is one of those books。 I've been anticipating the release for quite awhile and I was not disappointed in any way。 Sharon Draper brings Melody back from Out of My Mind, a year later, hoping to attend summer camp, You may wonder how I can possibly love so many books。 The key is reading the right reviews。 I read the middle grade books that have made the most "best of" lists, the ones that Kirkus and School Library Journal have chosen as stand outs, and the ones that particularly appeal to me。 This is one of those books。 I've been anticipating the release for quite awhile and I was not disappointed in any way。 Sharon Draper brings Melody back from Out of My Mind, a year later, hoping to attend summer camp, by herself。 Melody has cerebral palsy。 Her brain and heart work beautifully--really beautifully--but her body doesn't usually cooperate。 She longs for a summer camp where she can be one of the gang, not watch from the sidelines as all the kids at school have fun on the playground without her。 Where she won't be teased, or ignored。 Or both。 Can she do it? Ride horses? Swim in the pool? Sit by the bonfire? Make her own friends? Maybe even dance with a boy? This book joyfully celebrates the differences between all of us and provides so much insight into a world many of us may never have considered (or even ignored。) Totally wonderful in every way for both boys and girls。 4-7 grade。 。。。more

As I enjoyed ‘Out of my mind’, I thought I would like this one too, but didn’t finish the book。Most probably as it’s not a book for my age。

This book was really good but I still think that the first book was better。 I also think this book is happier then ‘Out of my heart’ in general but that’s just my opinion。

I only read "Out of My Mind" for the first time in January and I really loved it。 So, when I discovered that Sharon M。 Draper was writing a sequel, I knew I had to read it。 I really did enjoy the read and it was great spending time with Melody again。 I loved how empowered Melody became。 She learned that she didn't have to sit on the sidelines all the time but could be part of the action。 She surprised herself at how much she could do with some encouragement。On the negative side, you can definite I only read "Out of My Mind" for the first time in January and I really loved it。 So, when I discovered that Sharon M。 Draper was writing a sequel, I knew I had to read it。 I really did enjoy the read and it was great spending time with Melody again。 I loved how empowered Melody became。 She learned that she didn't have to sit on the sidelines all the time but could be part of the action。 She surprised herself at how much she could do with some encouragement。On the negative side, you can definitely feel the 10+ year gap between the 2 books。 The first one was a bit more timeless and this one feels very "2020" with lots of popular song mentions by name that will only become dated quickly which will only be a disservice to this book。 There also isn't any real conflict that drives this story unlike in the first book。 While heartwarming, there's not a lot here keeping you guessing what will happen next。That being said, it is a quick read and for those wondering what happened next with Melody, this will answer that question though there isn't much mentioned about any changes that occurred with the students on the quiz team and their teacher。 Will I think this will end up in every classroom like the first has? Probably not, but for those who really connected with the first book, it's an enjoyable read。 。。。more

Draper is definitely a top class writer。 I struggled with parts of this book though。 In some places it seemed to move slowly。 I continued reading though and was glad I did。 I don’t think the full impact could be appreciated until the end。 I recommend it highly as a MS classroom read, if not the whole book then definitely excerpts from it。 It made me really see special needs students through their eyes and experiences。
